Introduction

My name is Brooklynn Soderling. This is my first post in a series about my family and how alcohol abuse devastated us. Ever since I was young our family, my mom, dad, and I, always had a very close bond. The love we ad filled our house and created a great childhood for me. About three years ago everything began to change. My mom started to heavily abuse alcohol. For the next few years doctors told her another drink could be her last, and if she didn't change her habits she would die. She didn't stop. Our family struggled to help her. My dad and I cared for her, and she entered two rehabilitation centers. This wasn't enough. After about two years of fighting alcoholism she was bed ridden to a hospital bed in our house. She was on hospice care for the last six months of her life before she passed away on August 25th 2019. Alcohol is relentless. Anyone can become a victim to alcohol abuse. I share my families story in hopes that I can save others from allowing alcohol to ruin lives.

My mom didn't live to see my 16th birthday, watch me get my license, or see me play my sophomore year of volleyball. She will not be at my wedding, meet my children, or grow old with my dad. Her story ended too soon. Alcohol abuse has to be addressed and stopped. If you know someone who is suffering from alcoholism find them help. If you yourself are struggling with alcohol addiction do not be ashamed to reach out to professionals. Alcoholism is serious, but it can become manageable with time and the right care.
